June 2002, Steve Demers,
who was graduating at the time, created a mural map in the stairwell
of Ellison Hall, north wing, east side, third floor. Hand-painted
figures represent the population of the world. Steve took photographs
of people walking around campus, then drew simplified versions of
them. The stairwell was closed off for several weeks while Steve
worked on a scaffold, carefully painting each figure across the
20-foot span. The job was so large that, while others partied in
the Ellison quad at the party Geography hosts for its graduates
following Commencement, Steve was still painting figures on the
wall. A larger
file, where you can better see the figures on the whole wall,
is linked - but those with slow internet connections, beware: it
it 343 KB. Photos by Susanna Baumgart, assembled into a panorama
and framed by Anne Gabeler. |
