Beilei Zhang and Nancy Ponce were recently presented with UCSB Staff Service pins to commemorate reaching the 15-year service milestone. Beilei is our Management Services Officer who is in charge of departmental research grants and who supervises the research team; Nancy (left) is a Financial Analyst and provides support for Geography research. |

March 2004, Mo Lovegreen,
Geography's new MSO (top staff person), leads the staff in cleaning
up the Department — literally scrubbing walls and cleaning
floors — in preparation for the 30th Anniversary celebration
in May. Doudiness is out; pride is in! Keith Clarke caught Mo in
the act, using a disposable camera. The image was heavily Photoshopped
to improve its quality. |

August 1, 2003, staff went
to lunch for Connie's birthday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church's

June 2003, Ian Bortins doing
what he loves best - working on one of his cars, rebuilding a Firebird.
Ian did digital graphics and web work for the Department for two
years. He started as an intern in the summer of 2001 and was hired
in the winter of 2002. He "held down the fort" while the
Department Senior Artist was on medical leave and continued to assist
the Artist while she gained strength returning to work. He left
Geography June 4, 2003, to full-time work at Bechtel. Much thanks

June 6, 2002, at the Department
barbecue, Staff artist Susanna Baumgart with recent graphics interns,
all whom have made strong and talented contributions to the Department.
From left to right: Alex Salz (who has done the Colloquium posters
last winter and spring quarters), Laura Dell'Olio (who helped build
the Department website last summer and has been keeping the Earth
Gate site updated this spring), Susan Baumgart, Ian Bortins (who
was a stellar intern last summer and fall, and this spring headed
the crew of young artists while Susan was on medical leave), and
Steve Demers (who was an intern spring and summer 2001, and is creating
a map mural for the Department). Thank you Alex, Laura, Ian, and
